Clinical Psychology Postdoctoral Fellow
Dr. Marko Lamela helps his clients express their authentic selves and feel supported and empowered to achieve their therapeutic goals. He facilitates this process through warmth, genuineness, understanding, and humor when needed. Dr. Lamela believes that this creates an environment that allows for open and honest communication, which are the cornerstones for therapy to be effective
Dr. Lamela’s clinical treatment is client-centered and evidence-based. He places an emphasis on understanding the client as an individual and tailoring interventions to meet their specific goals. He provides ongoing support and validation, and assures them that he is here to help. Dr. Lamela recognizes that meeting with a stranger and divulging personal information is difficult and takes courage, which he hopes to honor by respecting and accepting a client’s unique situation, readiness, and comfort level during the course of therapy.
Using sessions tailored to the client through ongoing collaboration, Dr. Lamela guides clients through distressing events and helps them find the outcomes that best meet their needs by thoroughly examining their problems, thoughts, emotions, relationships, behaviors, and past experiences. Dr. Lamela helps his clients identify avenues for positive change and strategies to achieve these changes.
Dr. Lamela’s diverse training has equipped him with a deep understanding of the complexities of the human experience which aids in his interventions. He is committed to providing ethical and culturally-sensitive practice, and as such, he approaches clients with the knowledge that their cultural experiences have direct and unique impacts.
Dr. Lamela obtained his first master’s degree in clinical and counseling psychology from William Paterson University before returning to school to obtain master’s and doctoral degrees in Clinical Psychology from St. John’s University. Dr. Lamela has honed his therapeutic skills through a range of professional experiences, including providing treatment to adults for trauma, mood disorders, persistent and severe mental illness in a variety of clinical settings (e.g., hospital systems, primary care offices, private practice, and community mental health). Much of Dr. Lamela’s work has been with adolescents and adults experiencing major life changes, interpersonal relationship difficulties, communication difficulties, depression, anxiety, grief, and stress, as well as with couples.
