Biofeedback therapy, sometimes called biofeedback training, helps you improve your physical and mental health by teaching you techniques to control some of your body’s functions, such as your heart rate and temperature. When you’re feeling stressed or anxious, you might experience the following involuntary responses: increased heart rate, sweating, shallow and rapid breathing, contracting or tightening of your muscles, etc. With biofeedback therapy, you learn how to harness the power of your mind in order to become more aware of what’s going on inside your body so that you can gain control over some of your physiological processes. Electrical sensors or biofeedback devices are utilized in biofeedback therapy sessions in order to help you receive information about your body’s physiological functions. Specifically, these devices/sensors that are attached to your fingers or ears give you the opportunity to see the stress reactions in your body via graphics or prompts on a computer monitor. This information or feedback then allows you to make subtle changes in your body. For example, you may learn how to relax certain muscles or slow your heart rate, which will in turn help you better manage your anxiety or stress reactions.
Biofeedback therapy is used to manage or treat a wide range of physical and mental health problems. Those problems include:
