Mental Health Counseling Intern
Georgia Chan has a deep belief in an individual’s capacity to exercise agency and actively shape their own lives. She prides herself on providing culturally-sensitive care. Georgia takes a psychodynamic approach to therapy, and she also includes person-centered, feminist, and existential frameworks. This allows her to create and form mutually respectful and empathetic relationships with her clients, focusing on their strengths and the positive aspects of their lives even as they grapple with the challenges they face. Clients should leave her sessions feeling empowered, more connected to the world, and with a better understanding of themselves.
Georgia’s past research and employment positions have involved a focus on alleviating stress among minority sexual and racial groups, as she is deeply passionate about this work. She has been involved in evidence-based research on the role of mindfulness interventions for individuals of sexual and racial minorities, and she has conducted systematic reviews on intimate partner violence, sexual health, and trauma disclosure. She also has experience as a peer mental health advocate, destigmatizing mental illness and providing support for college-aged students.
Georgia is a mental health counseling intern at Northeast Psychological Wellness while she completes the first year of her master’s degree program at New York University. She is pursuing a concurrent certificate in LGBTQ+ Health, Education, and Social Services at the same institution.
